Holes in Eucalyptus Leaves? Sticky Debris on Cars & Property? Get Treatment Today.

The Dotted Paropsine Beetle has quickly become a harmful pest for eucalyptus trees across Southern California, especially in Long Beach, Orange County, and the greater Los Angeles area. There has been a rise in homeowners and property managers concerned about declining eucalyptus health, leaf damage, and the messy residue these beetles leave behind.

Originally from Australia, the Dotted Paropsine Beetle targets eucalyptus species by feeding on their leaves, creating irregular holes and thinning the canopy over time. This feeding damage can weaken trees, making them more vulnerable to stress, drought, and secondary pests. If you are noticing leaves that look chewed through or skeletonized, this is often one of the first signs of an active infestation.

Beyond tree health, many clients report a notable nuisance: the sticky residue and droppings produced by these beetles. This material can fall from infested eucalyptus trees onto cars, driveways, patios, and outdoor furniture. In high populations, it becomes more than just a minor inconvenience, affecting both cleanliness and property use.

Effective management of the Dotted Paropsine Beetle requires proper identification and a tailored treatment approach. A Certified Arborist can assess the severity of the infestation and recommend appropriate solutions based on current best practices.  In general, eucalyptus are too tall and property lines too close for foliar sprays to be effective.  Mink Tree Consulting uses a combination of soil injections and trunk injections to deliver systemic chemical control to the canopy without exposing the environment around the tree to overspray.

If you are seeing holes in your eucalyptus leaves, noticing debris or residue on your vehicles, or are concerned about the health of your trees, now is the time to act. Early intervention is key to protecting your landscape investment and preventing long-term damage.
